Booty, Sullivan contract details

July 23rd, 2008 – 1:57 PM by Chip Scoggins

Quarterback John David Booty and center John Sullivan both received four-year contracts.

Booty, a fifth-round pick, received a signing bonus around $205,000. He likely received a larger signing bonus because he is a quarterback. He received the standard base salary starting at $295,000 escalating to $555,000 in the final season.

Sullivan received a signing bonus of about $96,000 with a similar base salary structure.

Greetings from Mankato

July 23rd, 2008 – 1:31 PM by Judd Zulgad

First off, we’d like to thank our editor Chris Miller for helping blog the draft pick situation while we were en route to Mankato. I got a bit nervous when I saw a member of the state patrol turn his car around and head in my direction as I buzzed by on 169 but fortunately I wasn’t the target.

Anyway, the Zulgad-Scoggins era officially begins today as we await the late-afternoon arrival of players outside Gage Center. There is no doubt the Brett Favre-tampering topic is going to be a main question asked around these parts for the next few days, although it’s a good bet the term “no comment” is going to come up once, twice or 1,000 times.

Hazing can now begin

July 23rd, 2008 – 12:48 PM by Judd Zulgad

All the Vikings’ draft picks have agreed to terms.

Quarterback John David Booty and center John Sullivan were the last to wrap it up today, shortly after safety Tyrell Johnson signed.

Tyrell Johnson was the team’s first choice, taken in the second round (43rd overall) out of Arkansas State. USC’s Booty was a fifth-rounder (137thl), as was defensive tackle Letroy Guion of Florida State (152nd). Notre Dame’s Sullivan (187th) and Jackson State receiver Jaymar Johnson (193rd) were sixth-rounders.

Players are arriving in sunny Mankato today. Who knows, maybe the rookies will have to sing tonight at dinner as part of the camp tradition.

Top pick Johnson signs

July 23rd, 2008 – 10:19 AM by Judd Zulgad

Safety Tyrell Johnson, the Vikings’ second-round selection and the team’s top pick in the April draft, signed his contract this morning.

Johnson, who also can return punts, received a four-year contract with a bonus of around $1.5 million. His base salaries are $295,000 this year, $385,000 in 2009, $470,000 in 2010 and $555,000 in 2011. He also gets a one-time incentive bonus of $600,000 if is he on the field for 35 percent of the defensive snaps this season or 45 percent of the defensive snaps in 2009.

Draft picks update

July 22nd, 2008 – 8:52 PM by Chip Scoggins

The latest word is that the Vikings and second-round pick Tyrell Johnson are very close to a contract agreement and could have it finalized Wednesday morning.

Indications are that contracts for sixth-round pick John Sullivan and fifth-rounder John David Booty also could be finalized tomorrow.

A reminder that we’ll have our training camp preview in the paper and the website tomorrow. We’ll check in from Mankato in the afternoon or in the morning if the contracts get done.

Four down, one to go

July 22nd, 2008 – 3:06 PM by Judd Zulgad

As expected the Vikings have made big-time progress today in getting their five draft picks signed. Chip just got word the team has “verbal agreements” in place with quarterback John David Booty (fifth round) and center John Sullivan (sixth round). The team’s website is reporting that deals are in place with defensive tackle Letroy Guion (fifth round) and wide receiver Jaymar Johnson (sixth round).

Booty and Sullivan’s contracts should be finalized either later today or tomorrow. Meanwhile, second-round safety Tyrell Johnson — the Vikings’ top pick in the draft — appears to be close to agreeing to a deal.

Booty’s contract could be interesting to get a look at because of the fact he’s a quarterback. One reported bit of speculation estimated that Booty would get a signing bonus of about $200,000 on a four-year contract or $150,000 on a three-year deal.

Johnson received a four-year contract that begins with a base salary of $295,000 in 2008 and increases to about $555,000 in the final season. Guion is believed to have received similar base salaries. The total base salary for both players over the life of the contracts should be around $1.7 million.

Guion also got bonus money that probably is in the neighborhood of $175,000, if it’s a four-year contract.

Guion played college football at Florida State and only started 14 games before deciding to enter the draft after his junior season. The move came as a surprise to many who felt Guion would have been better served by playing another season at FSU. Johnson went to Jackson State and had seven touchdown catches last season. He also has the ability to return punts.

The team reports to training camp in Mankato on Wednesday and starts practicing on Friday.
